What is Welder Testing?

Welder testing is the in-service inspection and testing of welding power sources to make sure they are safe to use. It is a specialist job, separate from standard test and tag, and covers the welder, its leads and its safety systems.

It is carried out to AS 60974.4:2025, the current standard for in-service inspection and testing of welding equipment. That includes checking the Voltage Reduction Device using specialised equipment. The VRD is the safety feature that protects operators from the open-circuit voltage. We perform a range of measurements to confirm that peak voltages are within the required limits and the VRD is operating correctly and within specification.

Most test and tag operators do not carry the gear or the training to test welders. We are the specialist doing it across the South-West, with the right test kit and the know-how to do it right.

Start Welder Testing

What we test on a welder

  • Single and three-phase welding power sources
  • MIG, TIG, stick and multi-process welders
  • Voltage Reduction Devices (VRD)
  • Welding leads, torches and earth clamps
  • Insulation resistance and earth continuity
  • Engine-driven and portable welders

Very few operators test welders, and even fewer test the VRD properly. Welder testing is available by appointment from Perth throughout the greater South West.

Flexible Scheduling

We work around your site and your hours, and will travel for larger welder jobs across the South-West and beyond.

How often

How often welders need testing

AS 60974.4:2025 does not set a fixed testing interval. For welding equipment tested to AS 60974.4:2025, many businesses arrange the inspection annually.

A standard electrical test and tag may also be completed annually. These two inspections can be staggered by six months.

That way the welder receives some form of electrical safety inspection every six months, without doubling up.

There is no single mandated interval. We help you set a schedule that suits how hard your welders are worked and keeps you compliant.
